How bad management will affect your projects, your employees and your company.

By Andreas Maratheftis on Saturday, 29 of March , 2008 at 8:50 am

Ibad_manager.jpg wrote a couple of posts regarding failed projects. Out of these posts some things did stand out and especially how managers/company owners do affect the projects success. It’s not only communication within the team,it’s not only about understanding requirements, managing your client, giving correct estimates. It’s also how others above you effect the way you work and how you work, at the end end of the day it comes down to psychology.

I have seen this happen a lot of times, and personally i believe that when the environment and the people you work with are good then you become more productive and more effective. A big number of companies simply become the stepping stone for some employees, and to this day unfortunately i still hear that entire, newly build teams of employees leave simply because some managers, business owners just don’t learn or even better don’t want to learn.

So what is a bad manager? The list below can help employees and managers understand what is a bad manager, how it can affect their productivity and the success of their projects:
1. Bad managers don’t follow up on employees ideas
2. Don’t trust employees that have the proper skills and education and try to take control and make decision to satisfy their ego.
3. Withhold praise
4. Do not provide incentives (this of course doesnt have to be money) to promote the sense of competition
5. Never take responsibility for any action within the team.
6. Are not professional and ignore professional growth needs and employee development
7. Be all-knowing all the time
8. Do not provide employee feedback
9. Give bad examples on how to manage clients
10. Do not mentor employees –this goes for experienced managers.
11. Inconsistent
12. Most of the companies projects have failed and 99% of your clients are either unhappy or after doing business with the company decide not to do that ever again.

There are so many to mention.

mission_failed.jpgThis is the second part to the previous post regarding the reasons IT project’s fail.In the previous post i mentioned the general reasons, which most of the IT projects from small sites to enterprise applications have in common.
The second post focuses on the little things. Small misconceptions that if you add them up can make or break an IT project.

Back to the sun

By Andreas Maratheftis on Wednesday, 12 of March , 2008 at 4:08 pm

Just finished  a contract, with Great Ormond Street Hospital as  a Business Analyst. I loved it there, the job was very interesting and the people there where very very good. It’s amazing how the people you work with bring out the best of you and make you more productive and efficient. After 6.5 years in the UK, studying and working i have decided to move back to my country ,Cyprus, back to the sun.Although i am not that excited for the flight back, however i have a lot of things to look forward to, friends, family, the sun  and the quality of life there. This blog/site of course will remain as is. I am moving back to Cyprus in April and currently i have a lot of packing to do hence the end of the contract came at a good time. It was interesting here in the UK, it is one of the best places in the world to gain experience in the IT sector and it has helped me a lot. Cyprus at the moment has a huge growth in the IT field especially since 2004 and now with the EURO. Loads of companies have their offices there including Microsoft,Oracle,IBM,NCR,Deloitte,PWC and many many others. I am currently looking for employment opportunities there so if you have anything in mind let me know!
